Filter Focus: Mastering Polarizing & Neutral Density Filters Workshop
Whether you enjoy shooting in natural or urban environments, this workshop could be for you! You will learn the how, when, and why of using a polarizer to reduce glare and reflections, and increase contrast and vibrancy. You will also learn when NOT to use a polarizer. We will experiment with neutral density filters to create a variety of daytime long exposures as well as creative ICM (intentional camera movement) images. Photographers of all experience levels are welcome!
Those who attend can expect to learn the benefits of using filters in their photography. They will have a chance to practice using neutral density filters to smooth moving water, blur moving clouds for a dreamy effect, show movement of objects such as vehicles, remove (ghost) people from a busy scene, or create abstract scenes. In addition to playing with creative applications for filters, attendees will learn how to determine which camera settings to use while shooting with a neutral density filter, based on an understanding of equivalent exposures.
The workshop will take place outdoors and will involve some walking, so please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear.
What to Bring:
- DSLR or mirrorless camera
- polarizer and ND (neutral density) filters
- any lenses that are the same diameter as your filters (ie. 24-70mm, kit lens, 50mm, 15-35mm)
- fully charged batteries
- memory cards
- Tripod - necessary for long exposures

Tickets for this event are non-refundable, but they are transferrable if you find that you are unable to attend.
Carmen is a nature, landscape, and nightscape photographer with a background in teaching elementary school. The years spent observing the natural creativity and curiosity of children has influenced Carmen’s approach to exploring and capturing the natural world. Her experience as a teacher helps her to lead engaging photography workshops with clarity and individualized attention.

Making a Difference through Photography with Jonathan Gillingham Workshop
In this presentation, Jonathan will explore creative ways for how you can share your photography with others to make positive change in the lives of those around you. He will share his personal experience on how he's used his photography to give back to others in need. Creativity and artistic expression are gifts to share, and Jonathan strives to inspire others to use their creative talents to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
In the spirit of McBain's "Create to Inspire" motto, we are encouraging attendees to bring a print of one of their favourite images (an image that they took themselves) to share or swap with other attendees. McBain's branch stores in St. Albert, Sherwood Park, and Southgate can provide same-day in-store printing for small print orders (up to 8x12" and no more than a quantity of 100). Bring something to share. Inspire and be inspired!
Jonathan Gillingham, originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, is a nature photographer inspired by the vast Canadian wilderness. His journey from the coastal landscapes of his upbringing to the rugged terrain of the Northwest Territories reflects his profound connection to the land. A proud member of the NunatuKavut Community Council, Jonathan’s work is influenced by his indigenous culture, heritage, and passion for nature and conservation.
Now based in Yellowknife Northwest Territories, Jonathan continues to pursue his passion for capturing the essence of the wild. With an explorer’s spirit and a keen eye for detail, he seeks authentic moments in every image. His photography, showcasing pristine lakes and towering peaks, testifies to the magnificence of Canada’s remote wilderness.
