Canon EOS C80 6K Full-Frame Cinema Camera (RF Mount)

The Canon EOS C80 6K Full-Frame Cinema Camera delivers outstanding 6K30 full-frame video in a compact, lightweight design inspired by the EOS C70 while integrating the advanced CMOS sensor from the EOS C400. Designed for solo operators and fast-paced shoots, the C80 features triple ISO bases of 800, 3200, and 12,800 in log/raw, along with an upgraded Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus system. It supports simultaneous video output via 12G-SDI and HDMI, while its RF mount ensures compatibility with Canon’s high-performance RF lenses. A motorized ND filter wheel allows for seamless exposure adjustments on the go.

At the core of the EOS C80, a 6K full-frame CMOS sensor enhances image quality by reducing noise, improving sensitivity efficiency, and delivering superior 4K resolution through 6K oversampling. The back-illuminated, stacked sensor technology optimizes light capture, allowing for high-quality imaging in various lighting conditions. The C80 supports multiple recording formats, including full-frame 6K30 in Canon Cinema RAW Light LT and cropped Super 35 recording in RAW ST up to 4K30 and RAW LT up to 4K60. Additionally, oversampled 4K at 120p and 2K at 180p offer maximum detail with 4:2:2 10-bit color, while slow and fast motion recording is possible up to UHD 4K120 in HEVC and AVC codecs.

To streamline post-production, the camera incorporates XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S codecs, offering an intuitive naming system, improved folder organization, and metadata preservation, all within the familiar MP4 format. The built-in RF lens mount supports Canon’s RF lenses, known for their advanced coatings and image stabilization, while a short flange distance enables a more compact body design. A new PL-RF adapter expands lens compatibility, granting access to a broad selection of ARRI PL-mount cine lenses. This adapter also supports Cooke/i metadata and locking plates for a secure fit.

The EOS C80 includes full-size HDMI and 12G-SDI BNC outputs, both of which can be used simultaneously for monitoring, video transmission, or connecting an external EVF. A USB-C port allows for UVC video output and connectivity with a smartphone or Canon’s GP-E2 GPS receiver. Additionally, a BNC connector provides timecode input and output for easy syncing in multicamera setups, although it cannot output SDI video and timecode simultaneously.

Canon’s enhanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF system enables precise autofocus by utilizing nearly 100% of the sensor’s pixels for both focus detection and image capture. The back-illuminated stacked sensor maximizes light capture, expanding the usable area for autofocus. The EOS C80 also includes the EOS iTR AF X function, which employs deep-learning technology to improve human subject detection. For professional audio recording, the camera features two mini-XLR inputs with phantom power, manual control dials, and support for four-channel audio via the XLR ports, internal stereo mic, and a 3.5mm mic input.

A thin, motorized ND filter unit, designed to fit the EOS C80’s short flange distance, enables quick selection of up to 10 stops of neutral density for effortless exposure control. ND button controls on the right side of the camera allow operators to make fast adjustments while maintaining their desired depth of field. The C80 also supports Canon Log 2 and Log 3 gamma modes, offering an extended dynamic range with exceptional tonal reproduction in both highlights and shadows. Additionally, support for 3D LUTs ensures accurate color representation on both the LCD and external monitors.

Compact and ergonomic, the EOS C80 features a built-in grip, joystick control, and a reinforced hinge for its LCD screen. The Multi-Accessory hot shoe on top, along with a detachable handle and mic holder, enhances versatility. Built-in monitoring tools like focus peaking and waveform displays provide added control. The dual SD card slots support simultaneous, relay, and proxy video recording, and the camera is also capable of capturing JPEG still photos.

Connectivity options include an Ethernet port and built-in Wi-Fi, allowing remote control via the optional Canon RC-IP1000 or RC-IP100 units using the XC protocol. The Canon Multicamera Control app for iPhone enables remote control over key settings, including focus, iris, zoom, ND filter, ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and custom picture profiles.

Powering the EOS C80 is flexible, with compatibility for the included BP-A30N battery, the larger BP-A60N, or a 24V DC adapter. Older BP-A batteries can be used but do not support the Multi-Accessory hot shoe. For extended runtimes, a third-party cage can be used to mount a V-mount or Gold mount battery plate, ensuring uninterrupted operation in demanding shooting environments.
